A Support Group for Monastic Schools in Myanmar
The Buddhist
monastic school system in Myanmar is a familiar system. They
facilitate basic educational needs of the country - filling the
significant gap. The government has initiated many educational
projects but there still is huge room for us to help.
Traditionally, monastic schools provide not only curriculum
education but also ethical and moral foundation for the kids. The
monastic school system was a core educational system of the past for
more than 800 years but its role is still significant even now in
the 21st century Myanmar. Supplementing the government
elementary schools, the monastic schools nowadays provide
underprivileged children in Myanmar rural areas learn how to read,
write, and calculate exactly as in government elementary schools.
Basic education is essential for them to survive in this tough world
and our monastic schools are helping them greatly in this regard.
The
association “Nyatatthacariya” is a Non-Profitable
Organization which financially supports monastic schools in Myanmar
since 2005/2006. The group collected donations from Myanmar
nationals around the world and funded these schools providing
education for more than 210 students with 11 graduate teachers
in educational year 2005/2006. The group also helped two additional
school with 150 students and 6 more teachers in the same year. In
the educational year 2006/2007, the association has supported 350 students
from four NTCY schools. Additional two affiliated
schools were also assisted by NTCY schemes in the same year. All the schools
of NTCY are operating under
the rules and regulations of the Ministry of Religious Affairs,
Union of Myanmar.
Donating
money to schools in Myanmar is nothing new. But the
“Nyatatthacariya” association is different and unique. It is not
operating for one-off donations or in one-off support system.
The association takes total responsibility of running those schools
to a full educational year, i.e. eight months each year; starting
from year 2005/2006. The association provides salary for the
teachers who are working there, as well as books, pencils and as
such for the schools funded by the association.
Indeed, it
is a hybrid system, a modernized version of old monastic schools
where monks take all responsibility in combination with a modern
social group providing financial support. The association also
conducted other various training programmes during the semester breaks
(Summer) for the teachers working in NTCY.
We all want
to help the country but waiting for the right time - right course.
